This ain’t no combine

September 17, 2010

This photo Friday, a little photo love for my home-state Iowa Red Bulls – the Iowa National Guard has been called up for deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom – it’s the largest call up of the Iowa National Guard since World War II. The conditions at Fort Irwin sure aren’t pretty, but the training is as true-to-life as they can make it, and just what any Soldier needs when preparing for a deployment.

Members of the Iowa National Guard load vehicles during railhead operations at Camp Shelby, Miss. The vehicles are being railed to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, Calif., where the 2/34th Infantry Division will train this fall. Close to 2,800 soldiers from the Iowa National Guard have been called for deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This is the largest call up of the Iowa National Guard since WWII.

I worked at Ft. Irwin as a civilian IT Specialist back in ’08! While it is not Ft. Bragg by any stretch of the imagination, the people there are still great! Unfortunately, the desert out there is exactly what it seems – hot, dry, and as real as you can get without getting shot at. Actually, I take that last part back, the “Red Team” will shoot at you…
