Celebrate our deployed service members

October 26, 2010

Today marks the 5th celebration of the Day of the Deployed, a day set aside to honor and recognize our deployed service members. Soldiers’ Angels, an organization wholly committed to serving those who serve spearheads the Day of the Deployed, with a proclamation, poem, and even a list of ideas for how you can get involved in helping our deployed troops.

Check out the link here for more info and if you do nothing else to serve our troops today, sign their proclamation recognizing the Day of the Deployed. It’s said often but supporting our troops is a simple task. They don’t ask for your money, for your accolades or for any special sacrifice (although if you have a heart to serve our troops, Soldiers’ Angels can help you do so!) All they really want is your support, and it’s as simple as taking a moment to recognize their service.

I can still recall how appalled I was when Congress held a moment of silence for the death of Michael Jackson, when that same honor has not been afforded for our troops who have given their lives overseas. Again, our Soldiers aren’t out demanding honor and recognition but American citizens and especially our congressional representatives should be taking more than a moment to recognize those who risk it all, even their lives, for the sake of our freedom. The Day of the Deployed is a simple way to recognize our troops overseas and keep in mind, at a time when so many have forgotten, the fact that we still have thousands of deployed troops spending their days in harm’s way.

Thank you, Soldiers’ Angels, for all you do to support our troops, and thank you to all of those serving overseas. I pray that we never forget those who continue to leave their families behind, who serve and sacrifice so much – this day and every day.
